Originally founded by Venetian sailors during the period of the Venetian occupation of the Mediterranean, the castle was built to protect them from pirates and was also used as a base for refueling and rest.

Damouchari means ‘for the joy of love’ from the French ‘d’amour’, or ‘give me joy’ from the Virgin Marys’ prayer. Pleas were made for the safety of, and prayers sent for the Venetian sailors who were residents of the area and chased by pirates.

They used the same storerooms and warehouses that the locals used to store their commercial products. In the early 20th century there were no roads to link Tsagkarada and the rest of the villages of Volos so this was the way that supplies of food and pharmaceuticals came in, through the harbor of Damouchari, which operated at the time as the customs office and storeroom.

In the area of Damoucharis there are several traditional guesthouses, old and new, picturesque houses, rooms to rent and a few tavernas. However, in the neighboring villages there are many hotels, traditional guesthouses, restaurants and places to dine.
